News of content controls (w:sdt) and data binding

Unfortunately that thread seems dead, so I post a new topic. I need to create relatively simple documents (invoices for now). I have to rely on non-technical users for maintaining the templates and don't want to burden them with additional tools. Hence the requirement to prepare the template completely in Word.

I'm trying to remove the sdt tag from a document section so the user can copy/paste from word into another document without copying the control block section. To avoid a control block in another control block.
Yes, if you carefully position the copy area you can only get the text or just remove the control block from word. But some users are not that savvy.

I have a Word template with content controls and a custom XML part. I have used the Word 2007 Content Control Toolkit to bind the XML with the content controls. When I open the document I can see that it has been updated from the XML file. However, if I try to make the binding with code, I get the error message

I have an issue binding xml parts with unicode characters beyond the latin1 extended set.
I'm using the OpenDope Authoring plugin in Word to create a template and a docx4java client program, similar to the one in to perform the actual merge.

The unicode char U+2318 is contained in an xml element to be merged. When I use it inside the OpenDope plugin in Word, it gets inserted correctly in the Word document. ...

I am trying to add content controls which should be bound to a custom xml, so that I can generate word doc, by using docx4j. After looking at various posts, it seems, some add-inns are needed to be installed for that. I was wondering, if by any chance that could be possible without any of these add-inns ?

I'm using BindingHandler.applyBindings to bind content controls to XML values in custom parts.
Please note that this code predates the Docx4J class (or I would've used Docx4J.bind) and that I'm working with a locally built nigthly version of Docx4j with xalan 2.7.1.

Calling the applyBindings method results in the following failure:

I'm working on migrating our application from Docx4j 2.8.1 to 3.0.1 (figured best to not jump ahead to 3.2.0).
The application mostly consists of a traversal of a docx document (replacing/adding various elements along the way), binding content controls to custom XML parts using BindingHandler and removing SDT using the RemovalHandler. This is all stable using 2.8.1.
Using 3.0.1 though, at the applyBindings stage, the process fails with a java.util.EmptyStackException.

So I stumbled across this OpenDope solution for Word. But after testing out the addins and trying to understand the documentation, and haven't gotten much to work yet, I'm still not sure if this fits the bill.

I'm posting because when I use "Add Condition", with the OpenDoPE Add-In in order to wrap a binded value to the XML, I've got a dox4JException saying that it can't evaluate the xpath. Even if it's the default xpath appearing when clicking on "Add Condition".

For example:

generates an error with the log message:

When I do:

But the footnotes I copied from another document did not work. If I had a footnotespart already created in the document, it works. So, I compared to see the differences.
